This was one of the more unusual projects I ever worked on. Visual artist Nicoline van Harskamp wanted to create a video by selecting fragments from the autobiographies of eleven historical figures (Benazir Bhutto, Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, Fidel Castro, Hillary Clinton, Kwame Nkrumah, Margaret Thatcher, Ayan Hirsi Ali, Barack Obama, Frederik Willem de Klerk, and Ariel Sharon) and assembling them into a single speech, delivered by a professional actor. I served as the scriptwriter, patching, editing, and in some cases, re-imagining the old passages in very different contexts. In 2009, for this and other work, Nicoline van Harskamp was awarded the Prix de Rome, one of the most prestigious Dutch awards for visual artists. Variations of Character Witness were presented in  Paris and Brussels in subsequent years. Nicoline's ideas are described in greater detail here on the her website.
